Blog 10

The PowerPoint interaction assignment really gave me new skills when using PowerPoint. Because of this assignment, I now know how to properly use action buttons. What I liked about this assignment is that we could format the PowerPoint in a way that resembled a game of jeapordy. There was not anything specific I did not like about this assignment. I hope  to incorporate jeapordy games in my classroom.

As a teacher, using data collection tools can be really helpful when it comes to measuring  understanding. In my high school history classroom, I plan to make online survey after each chapter that each student wil have to opportunity  to take. The survey will ask what level of understanding  the students feel they have achieved regarding the chapter. This will allow me to better identify student's weaknesses and strengths.

What I found most interesting when reviewing my classmates blog was the design of their blogs. My blog design looks very trivial compared to theirs.  Their background complements their headings and each post is written clearly. Their blog show a distinct demonstration of the CRAP principles we learned in class.

A technology related skill I would like to learn next is how to effectively type. Most of the teacher's I've had in the past have the ability to type fast without typing errors. Perhaps I need to take a typing class that would help me better hone my typing skills. Being able to type fast will allow me to send emails quickly.

As stated before, I may look to take more classes here at FSU about technology. Furthermore, I may seek to be certified in adobe products like Photoshop or Dreamweaver. Knowledge in both of these areas would allow me to led a helping hand to my students when they have to create projects. Being up to date with technology will help me to use tools in the classroom that my students are use to using.

The form of technology advancement  that may hold the greatest promise for education  may be the increasing development of Web  2.0 tools. Students in today's  age interact with Web 2.0 tools on a daily basis. Whether it be through smart phone applications or applications on a desktop, students are more engaged with these tools more than ever. In the classroom, Web 2.0 tools can be used to form classroom  blogs that along students to communicate  with each other in and outside of the class. These tools take classroom learning further away from the traditional  lecture method,  which is becoming  less prominent.

Perhaps another future technology  that can impact education is the development  of 3d printers. Although  3d printers are relatively expensive,  they can serve as a piece of adaptive  technology.  For example, students  who are blind may find it beneficial to feel a different geometrical  shapes in order to get a better grasp of them. As time passes, the efficiency  of the printers will increase as more features are added. Furthermore the cost of these printers will go down.

The digital divide refers to the gap in the accessibility of modern technology  in different regions. As a student at FSU, I am apart of the digital divide that has access to modern technologies,  both at home and in a classroom  setting. In a classroom, students  who do not have access to such technologies  may find it difficult to practice material gone over in class. As a teacher, I plan to print out lesson for each of my students to have.

In a lesson about WWI, a PowerPoint would be useful to help students learn according to Bloom's taxonomy.  At the "remember" and "understanding" levels, I would incorporate videos along with slides that emphasize the same thing.  At the apply level,  I would use delayed bullet points in order to allow students to attempt to predict coming information based on previous info.  Finally at the "analyze" level I would use two content slides that emphasize the differences between the Allied Forces and the Axis Powers.

Adaptive technologies are "designed to increase or maintain capabilities of people with disabilities". These technologies are necessary in large schools where there is a greater population of people with disabilities.  I have not used any adaptive technologies myself, however, I can recall observing a girl using a braille laptop. Perhaps the greatest challenge associated with these technologies are their expensive nature.

After completing the web page assignment, I have become more versed in my design skills. I liked that I was able to choose themes, and colors that add to my websites purpose. Furthermore,  i enjoyed working with the free websites for teachers that already came with teacher stuff,  such as calendars and announcements.

In the school website I visited,  I saw a large number of graphics and pictures on display. The classroom page I visited outlined course assignments, projects, and testing to be completed by the end of the school year. Mr. Buddoo, a 9th grade geometry teacherx split up the course into 4 marking periods. Each period contained information about what to expect during the period. The design of the classroom page is what stood out to me the most.  It was very decorative,  yet, is to use for students and parents.

When I become a teacher,  I plan to use email to complete my professional responsibilities.  Although email has been around for awhile, I feel most teachers do not use it effectively.  In my opinion,  people are not aware of email etiquette, and as a result,  maybe be easily misinterpreted.  I plan to be aware of email etiquette.  Furthermore I plan to use,  mail merge, an aspect of Microsoft Word, to send efficient mass messages.

The Web Resource assignment has helped me to properly evaluate sources I plan to incorporate in anything.  I now know what criteria to look for in a source. I liked that I was able to use my own evaluation form to evulate a potential source. I plan to use my own evaluation form when looking for sources to back my lecture.

WWI Concept Map

Web 2.0 Tools

Web 2.0 technologies that are useful in classroom include Youtube and classroom blogs. Youtube allows teachers to access videos related to the content and blogs allows interaction outside the classroom to take place. In order to effectively use these tools, teachers need equipment that can keep their students safe while engaging with them. For example, a classroom set-up that links the teacher's monitor with all the computer monitors of the students should be beneficial. The teacher would be able to observe the sites and webpages each student is accessing while using these tools.

Diigo is a Web 2.0 tool that can be very useful in the classroom setting. Diigo allows multiple users to directly annotate webpages as they simultaneously browse the page. Such a tool would prove to exceptional in a reading class. Students would have the opportunity to read text together while making notes and viewing notes made by others. This technology would promote and enhance the learning experience.
With Diigo you can archive pages, save your own personal library, and place sticky notes on any of your saved web pages. Such technology is what newer generations look to gravitate to, so putting this inside the classroom would be completely beneficial. Diigo comes with a free version that all students can access with no cost to them. There are more advanced versions of Diigo, however, they are more expensive. https://www.diigo.com/

After completing the Concept Map assignment, I have gained familiarity with the Inspiration program. Prior to the assignment, I had no knowledge of Inspiration, however, I now know to use it. I liked that I was able create any type of concept map I felt would best fit the information presented. This gave me freedom in the placement of certain information on the concept map. I could have added more features to the design aspect of the map to add to its aesthetic value.

Web Hunt Challenges

  • Locate a picture of a hot air balloon that is available for public use
  • Find a website that can help develop your students typing skills

Blog Post 4

SS.912.G.1:Understand how to use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technology to report information. The tool I will use to help my students understand this standard is http://maps.nationalgeographic.com/maps. This tool will enable me to pull up various types maps of the world that represent specific information that the students must report. After practicing with this online tool for some time, my students will come to the mastery of ss.912.G.1.

The Internet is extremely useful when it supporting student research. It allows students to access information from times past to present from all over the world. However, information found on the Internet is only useful if it is coming from a credible source. Using information from sources that have no established credibility is dangerous because their information could be totally incorrect or overwhelmingly biased. Therefore, it is important to look for the writers of your potential sources to be sure they are experts in their field.

In past, I typically just typed in the topic I was writing on in the Google search engine, and simply clicked the first result I got and used it as a source. Furthermore, I rarely evaluated the validity of the source, because I was never taught to do so. Now, I aware that I can use Google Scholar to search for scholarly articles that tend to be more credible. From the Podcast, I learned that I should make sure the site I plan to use as a source is visually pleasing, easy to navigate, and current. These are things I never previously did, however, now I will.

After completing the Web Hunt assignment I feel I am better equipped to search the web more effectively. Learning the roles of (-) and (+) really helps in finding exactly what I am looking for using Google. The most surprising aspect of the assignment was probably how easy it was to find an article using Google Scholar.  Navigating the Internet with all the shortcuts and precision tools I have learned will make my Google searches even faster than they already are.

Visual Critique, Digital Citizenship, Newsletter

In this post, I get to critique one of my favorite websites of all time, nationalgeographic.com. At first look, the website seems like a collage of articles, pictures, and videos. To some extent this is true, however, the website is a lot more user-friendly than it might seem. Tabs located directly at the top of the home screen make it easy to find specific categories. I appreciate the fact that the website is not as striking as it could be, considering it deals with national geography. Instead, it is highlighted by pictures of animals presented on a neutral, yet aesthetically pleasing background. If I could change anything about this website, I would consider to decrease the amount of media held within the site. Such an enormous amount of media makes it difficult for each page to load quickly. I cannot be too upset with the amount of media encompassed in the website because I understand that it is national geography, and perhaps a large amount is necessary.

Once I enter the classroom, I plan to incorporate the use of Microsoft PowerPoint and Youtube on a daily basis(or every other day) if possible. As a teacher, I will look to limit the necessity of some forms of technology outside of the classroom because I understand that not all individuals have access to the same technologies. Therefore, my students will not need to be concerned about the issues of digital communication or digital commerce for example. Perhaps the only concept of digital citizenship I will need to address is digital literacy. Teaching them how to use different programs and software will be vital to their future success. I plan on teaching high school students(older teenagers) therefore, they should have the capacity to learn how to operate Youtube and PowerPoint, especially in today's age.

After completing the Newsletter Design assignment, I feel I have become more creative in using Microsoft Word. I used to believe Word was just a basic word processor, however, I learned that it has more advanced functions thought I had no knowledge of. I liked that we were required to shade at least one section. Shading can provide a little color to a basic, boring document. I cannot identify a specific aspect of the assignment that I did not like.

Technology in the Classroom

In today's era of technology, it is essential that computers are incorporated into the classroom. Computers enable users to quickly gather information through all kinds of mediums(articles, podcasts, etc), a useful ability that should be adapted into classrooms. In addition, computers offer an alternative source of knowledge outside a teacher's expertise. Although computers bring large advantages to classrooms, not all schools have access to this resource. Every educational institution have priorities that are affected by economic resources, and technology is one of them. Perhaps the most critical aspect of the incorporation of technology in classroom is its economic cost because it directly affects budget, a priority some officials hold higher than education itself.

The most prevalent way I plan to use technology in my classroom is as a teaching aid. Instead of catering only to auditory learners through spoken lecture, I plan to use PowerPoint Presentations to accompany my lecture. This form of lecture will allow me to accommodate visual and auditory learners. I hope to learn how to include all or most learning styles in my methods of teaching, especially with the aid of technology.

According to the podcast, a digital native is "a person who has grown up knowing technology", a definition I am comfortable agreeing with.  In the past, I have experienced differences in how my past teachers(digital immigrants) and I(digital native) use technology, or do not use it. Just two years ago, my history teacher gave all her students a forewarning on the first day of class. She informed us that she would not be using PowerPoint or any technological aids in the classroom, just her voice and notes sufficient for lecture. This made learning in her class difficult for students who were not primarily auditory learners. When I become a teacher, I do feel that there will be differences with my students on how to use technology. Technology comes with its innate duty to change and progress, and not growing up with new technologies makes it difficult to put them in use.

MS Word, Copyright, Twitter

A great majority of my experience working with MS Word as a student has come from writing essay. Many times my previous teachers have struggled to read the handwriting of my peers and I and as a result, asked us  to type our essays into MS Word. Word processing on MS Word is fairly simple, and I cannot recall a time where i struggled to complete my given task. My past teachers have used MS Word to type directions for assignments that were simple to read and understand. Although I have not come across any new ideas on how to use MS Word as a teacher, I do plan on incorporating it in a similar fashion as my past teachers did.

The concept of plagiarism was foreign to me until middle school where I was able to grasp the seriousness of it. I have not intentionally plagiarized during my time in school, however, I have seen the consequences of it through the experiences of others. As a teacher, I will stress the idea of giving credit to previous researchers if their idea is used. Furthermore, I will ask my students to further elaborate on past ideas with their own originality and creativity. As a teacher, I will avoid copying huge texts from textbooks unless it is available for fair use.

As shocking as it may seem, I have not used Twitter prior to my enrollment in this court. I do have knowledge of how the social media forum works however. I recognized how effective Twitter can be in alerting large groups, quickly, in short and concise rhetoric.  As a future educator, I would be open to creating a Twitter feed for my students where we can share ideas, pictures, and short post that encourage learning inside and outside of the classroom.

Experiences, Hopes, and Learning Styles

Majority of my experiences with technology have been positive and helpful, however, few have been miserable. I can recall a time in class where we were expected to present Powerpoints on various authors. I emailed my presentation to my instructor the night before the presentation in hope that I would be covered before the actual day. Once it was finally time to present, the Powerpoint failed to open on my instructor's laptop, and I was forced to receive an F on the presentation.

In this class, I hope to acquire the knowledge necessary for efficiently and effectively integrating technology in my future classroom. I want to avoid the overuse of technology within the classroom, but at the same time, I know that technology is a must in today's day and age. I would like to find ways to provide visual and audio aids instead of being the sole voice of knowledge on a daily basis. I am confident that this class will help me in becoming a quality teacher.

Considering today's activity on learning styles, I learned that I am more of an reflective learner, a learner who prefers to think about a concept or theory before discussing it. In addition, instead of leaning on an intuitive style of learning, I realized that I am more of a sensor learner. When it comes to visual versus verbal learning and sequential versus global learning, I am a balanced learner who does not demonstrate any preference.
