Blog 10

The PowerPoint interaction assignment really gave me new skills when using PowerPoint. Because of this assignment, I now know how to properly use action buttons. What I liked about this assignment is that we could format the PowerPoint in a way that resembled a game of jeapordy. There was not anything specific I did not like about this assignment. I hope  to incorporate jeapordy games in my classroom.

As a teacher, using data collection tools can be really helpful when it comes to measuring  understanding. In my high school history classroom, I plan to make online survey after each chapter that each student wil have to opportunity  to take. The survey will ask what level of understanding  the students feel they have achieved regarding the chapter. This will allow me to better identify student's weaknesses and strengths.

What I found most interesting when reviewing my classmates blog was the design of their blogs. My blog design looks very trivial compared to theirs.  Their background complements their headings and each post is written clearly. Their blog show a distinct demonstration of the CRAP principles we learned in class.

A technology related skill I would like to learn next is how to effectively type. Most of the teacher's I've had in the past have the ability to type fast without typing errors. Perhaps I need to take a typing class that would help me better hone my typing skills. Being able to type fast will allow me to send emails quickly.

As stated before, I may look to take more classes here at FSU about technology. Furthermore, I may seek to be certified in adobe products like Photoshop or Dreamweaver. Knowledge in both of these areas would allow me to led a helping hand to my students when they have to create projects. Being up to date with technology will help me to use tools in the classroom that my students are use to using.

The form of technology advancement  that may hold the greatest promise for education  may be the increasing development of Web  2.0 tools. Students in today's  age interact with Web 2.0 tools on a daily basis. Whether it be through smart phone applications or applications on a desktop, students are more engaged with these tools more than ever. In the classroom, Web 2.0 tools can be used to form classroom  blogs that along students to communicate  with each other in and outside of the class. These tools take classroom learning further away from the traditional  lecture method,  which is becoming  less prominent.

Perhaps another future technology  that can impact education is the development  of 3d printers. Although  3d printers are relatively expensive,  they can serve as a piece of adaptive  technology.  For example, students  who are blind may find it beneficial to feel a different geometrical  shapes in order to get a better grasp of them. As time passes, the efficiency  of the printers will increase as more features are added. Furthermore the cost of these printers will go down.

The digital divide refers to the gap in the accessibility of modern technology  in different regions. As a student at FSU, I am apart of the digital divide that has access to modern technologies,  both at home and in a classroom  setting. In a classroom, students  who do not have access to such technologies  may find it difficult to practice material gone over in class. As a teacher, I plan to print out lesson for each of my students to have.

Blog Post 7

In a lesson about WWI, a PowerPoint would be useful to help students learn according to Bloom's taxonomy.  At the "remember" and "understanding" levels, I would incorporate videos along with slides that emphasize the same thing.  At the apply level,  I would use delayed bullet points in order to allow students to attempt to predict coming information based on previous info.  Finally at the "analyze" level I would use two content slides that emphasize the differences between the Allied Forces and the Axis Powers.

Adaptive technologies are "designed to increase or maintain capabilities of people with disabilities". These technologies are necessary in large schools where there is a greater population of people with disabilities.  I have not used any adaptive technologies myself, however, I can recall observing a girl using a braille laptop. Perhaps the greatest challenge associated with these technologies are their expensive nature.

After completing the web page assignment, I have become more versed in my design skills. I liked that I was able to choose themes, and colors that add to my websites purpose. Furthermore,  i enjoyed working with the free websites for teachers that already came with teacher stuff,  such as calendars and announcements.

In the school website I visited,  I saw a large number of graphics and pictures on display. The classroom page I visited outlined course assignments, projects, and testing to be completed by the end of the school year. Mr. Buddoo, a 9th grade geometry teacherx split up the course into 4 marking periods. Each period contained information about what to expect during the period. The design of the classroom page is what stood out to me the most.  It was very decorative,  yet, is to use for students and parents.

When I become a teacher,  I plan to use email to complete my professional responsibilities.  Although email has been around for awhile, I feel most teachers do not use it effectively.  In my opinion,  people are not aware of email etiquette, and as a result,  maybe be easily misinterpreted.  I plan to be aware of email etiquette.  Furthermore I plan to use,  mail merge, an aspect of Microsoft Word, to send efficient mass messages.

The Web Resource assignment has helped me to properly evaluate sources I plan to incorporate in anything.  I now know what criteria to look for in a source. I liked that I was able to use my own evaluation form to evulate a potential source. I plan to use my own evaluation form when looking for sources to back my lecture.

WWI Concept Map

Web 2.0 Tools

Web 2.0 technologies that are useful in classroom include Youtube and classroom blogs. Youtube allows teachers to access videos related to the content and blogs allows interaction outside the classroom to take place. In order to effectively use these tools, teachers need equipment that can keep their students safe while engaging with them. For example, a classroom set-up that links the teacher's monitor with all the computer monitors of the students should be beneficial. The teacher would be able to observe the sites and webpages each student is accessing while using these tools.

Diigo is a Web 2.0 tool that can be very useful in the classroom setting. Diigo allows multiple users to directly annotate webpages as they simultaneously browse the page. Such a tool would prove to exceptional in a reading class. Students would have the opportunity to read text together while making notes and viewing notes made by others. This technology would promote and enhance the learning experience.
With Diigo you can archive pages, save your own personal library, and place sticky notes on any of your saved web pages. Such technology is what newer generations look to gravitate to, so putting this inside the classroom would be completely beneficial. Diigo comes with a free version that all students can access with no cost to them. There are more advanced versions of Diigo, however, they are more expensive. https://www.diigo.com/

After completing the Concept Map assignment, I have gained familiarity with the Inspiration program. Prior to the assignment, I had no knowledge of Inspiration, however, I now know to use it. I liked that I was able create any type of concept map I felt would best fit the information presented. This gave me freedom in the placement of certain information on the concept map. I could have added more features to the design aspect of the map to add to its aesthetic value.
